I’m blown away by the level of support from fellow rail enthusiasts in building this site. Their willingness to participate in its construction with no prospect of financial gain, just the satisfaction of being involved, is bloody marvellous. Starting in May , Derek’s input has been a massive undertaking and there have been times when the pair of us – just two bungling old geezers with a mutual love for trains and railways – were on our arthritic knees by the sheer size of it all.
And now here we are with three finished pages…or are they? The interest shown by modellers has spurred Derek to suggest a series of articles on the ‘Britannias’ that will be of particular interest to model makers

The House met at Please join me in prayer. Heading into this budget, like many Ontarians, I was hopeful; hopeful that the Premier was truly listening to the people of this province. Not just talking about listening and consulting, but really listening to the people of Ontario, because over the last couple of years, most Ontarians have seen a Premier and a government that look out of step and out of touch with the real struggles, the real challenges, the real hopes of families across this province.
They see a Premier who at every turn, Speaker, seems more and more preoccupied with the well-being and success of the Liberal Party than she is with the well-being and success of Ontario families, children and seniors. The Liberals chose to put private profits ahead of the priorities of people, and Ontarians are seeing that. I have to tell you, the Liberals have a new word for this—no word of a lie, Speaker.

The phrase basket-type hilts refers to a large group of hilts which provide a degree of protection to the hand and wrist. Basket-hilted swords have featured prominently among British military edged weapons over the past five centuries, from the Wars of the Roses in the mid fifteenth century to the period immediately after the second Boer War of the early twentieth century.
In setting out to give a full account of the hilt type, and the many variants within it, the first necessity has been to provide an appropriate terminology to employ in cataloguing and describing individual examples. The book, well illustrated with black and white illustrations, falls into several parts, dealing successively with general aspects of various hilt types and discussion of typological methodology, the three major groups of basket-hilted swords, the diverse group of incomplete basket hilts, ‘mortuary’ hilts, and hilts closely related to ‘mortuary’ hilts.
His large collection of British military swords may be seen at Brown University, donated by the author.
SHARE Although studying creativity is considered a legitimate scientific discipline nowadays, it is still a very young one. In the early s, a psychologist named J. Guilford was one of the first academic researchers who dared to conduct a study of creativity. He challenged research subjects to connect all nine dots using just four straight lines without lifting their pencils from the page.
Today many people are familiar with this puzzle and its solution. In the s, however, very few were even aware of its existence, even though it had been around for almost a century. If you have tried solving this puzzle, you can confirm that your first attempts usually involve sketching lines inside the imaginary square. The correct solution, however, requires you to draw lines that extend beyond the area defined by the dots.
Only 20 percent managed to break out of the illusory confinement and continue their lines in the white space surrounding the dots. The symmetry, the beautiful simplicity of the solution, and the fact that 80 percent of the participants were effectively blinded by the boundaries of the square led Guilford and the readers of his books to leap to the sweeping conclusion that creativity requires you to go outside the box.

Preface This book is not an attack upon the Armed Forces nor upon the vast majority of senior military commanders, who, in time of war, succeeding in a task which would make the running of a large commercial enterprise seem like child’s play by comparison. It is, however, an attempt to explain how a minority of individuals come to inflict upon their fellow men depths of misery and pain virtually unknown in other walks of life.
The book involves a putting together of contributions from a great many people — historians , sociologist, psychologists and of course Soldiers and Sailors. It is hoped that none of these will feel misrepresented in the final picture which their contributions made. For errors of fact, and for the opinions expressed, I alone take full responsibility. In the writing in this book, I a look very great debt of gratitude to all those who gave generously of their time to reading in discussing earlier drafts.
Their encouragement, criticisms and advice have been in valuable. In particular I would like to thank Mr. Penelope Dixon and Dr. Hugh L’Etang for the many sorts of help they gave at every stage. For the long hour she spent tearing out research, checking contents, and assisting with the index I owe a great deal of gratitude to Dr.
