Hallmarks and other markings 4. Date codes on Parker Pens Updated Oct In mid Parker began marking most pens and pencils with a date code, both the barrel and the nibs were marked, but lacking a date code doesn’t necessarily mean that the pen was made pre , since many imprints have been worn off with use. The first date codes, found for example on the Vacumatics, consists of two digits, the first one denoting the quarter of production, the second denoting the production year. Hence a “47” marking on a ‘s pen indicate that the pen was produced in the fourth quarter of , not , which is a common misconception. In the second quarter of this system was however changed to save production time, and a new date code, using a system of dots, was adopted. The stamp initially had three dots and for each quarter one dot was filed down leaving none for the fourth quarter. Since production was overlapping examples exist with either the imprint 28 or. Also, since this coding system extended over a decade, a pen marked 38 could be produced the third quarter either in or

Same qty 1 prices as in It is a very distinctive pattern rumored to have originated from a cigarette case owned by Kenneth Parker that was made by a 19th-century English silversmith. This pattern was produced for the entire production lifetime of the Parker 75 family and so there are more of this model than any other Parker 75 model. When first introduced, it was known simply as the sterling Parker 75 in the crosshatch grid pattern.
Evenly spaced lines engraved around the barrel and cap, and down along their lengths form the square grid pattern. A patent for the design as applied to a writing instrument was filed on June 5, and finally granted on September 27, Today this pattern is so recognizable as a Parker 75; there was even a 75 cigarette lighter , knife , and souvenir keychain in this pattern. Of course other pen manufacturers followed suit with similar designs in this classic pattern.
The early versions, however, had the lines filled with black enamel so that the grid was accentuated. The process of placing the enamel was actually quite simple. The pen was simply coated with this material. To remove the excess enamel off the sterling silver, the pens was placed in a washing machine-like device with a drum containing a rotating agitator; it was filled with chips of walnut shells. The action of the chips rubbing against the pens caps and barrels would remove the excess material but, being larger than the line widths, the chips could not touch the enamel within the lines.
The process was completed with polishing the pen.

Metal nibs have their origins as far back as ancient Egypt and were made of metals like copper and bronze. However, the quality of writing that could be achieved with these pens was inferior to that of reed pens. Metallic nibs were made up through the 18th-century as one-off, craftsman-made luxury items .
In the early ‘s, Wise in Britain, and Peregrine Williamson in the United States were the first recorded makers of steel pens as their primary occupation. Metal nibs are also easily manufactured to have different properties for different purposes. Also, they can now be attached to and removed from holders, allowing one to switch between nibs with relative ease.

Well, here it is, and again, I hope these are just the facts. Something has been bothering me for years, now, and I have to make my apologies for it. In September , there was a discussion on Pentrace about various Parker depression pens. In the years since then, I noticed a curious thing in the listings for depression pens on Ebay and on other pen websites. I hate to say it, but some of the well-respected dealers on Ebay are some of the guilty ones. But that misuse of the word was not my intended end result, so let me revisit the whole issue again, and reappraise, and revise, and restate my stand on these types of pens.

Many people have a whole lot of pens, myself included, yet there are a select few in my collection that I would consider the best; the pens that, if I had to give up all my other pens, I would choose to keep. Limited editions are one of the main culprits that fit the bill here. Who really cares if there are only other pens like yours? Take, for example, the numerous LE Visconti fountain pens that seem to come out every week and come encased in boxes made from fine cedar and gold leaf.
Do you think they write better than your regular Visconti?

Home Dating A Pen Dating A Pen Dating a pre Parker 45 usually involves a little detective work and the results can be rather general to say the least, giving a rough idea rather then a specific date. Check for a date code on the side of the cap. These are usually found to the right of the country of manufacture. If the pen is boxed with paperwork in the box check the paperwork for a sale date.
This will tell us when the pen was sold, not when it was made. Some earlier US pens had a date code on the box indicating the year of manufacture. Model — Some models date from specific years or had identifying features during certain time periods. Example 1 Looking at the pen we have a Parker 45 Coronet in Green complete with box and paper work.

The stylographic pen was the precursor to the ballpoint pen, according to the Cross website. Dating a Cross pen is difficult, as the company has no dating system conveyed on the pen.

Mary-Louise Parker to pen memoir about ‘the significant men in her life’
By Rick Propas [Note: A list of sources and additional reading is to be found at the end of this piece. Rather this is meant to be a readable introduction to Pelikans for beginning collectors and newcomers] The history of Pelikan begins with Germany’s industrial revolution in the early nineteenth century and continues into the global economy of today.
During that period, the firm has consistently been a technological leader, even as its fortunes rose and fell. Eight years later Wagner took over the business giving it his name and expanding it into office supplies. In , Wagner added the name of Pelikan, from one of the elements in his family crest.
Blue Parker ® ballpoint pen entries (Medium, ISO , UK) were applied on multifunction bright-white, wood and chlorine free paper from Igepa Plus (80 g/m 2, DINA4, nr. A 80, Reinbeck, Germany). Eleven additional blue ballpoint pens were purchased in Germany for comparison purposes.
Jump to summary chart For those of us concerned with when a pen was made, Parker is the sweetest of all makers, in that many of their pen actually have a date printed right on them. Not only the year, but which quarter of the year, will appear, giving a very clear sense of just how old the pen is. While modern Parkers that follow this practice mark only the barrel or cap of the pen, vintage pens generally have a code on the barrel and on the point. One generally takes the barrel as definitive of the age of the pen as a unit, since caps, barrels and blind caps were usually all made together, and swapping tends to show.
This does not mean that a point whose date code does not agree with the barrel is necessarily a replacement. An other thing to not get too concerned about is finding a pen has lost its code. Modern pens are much more likely to present their codes, but their codes are less easily understood. Third Quarter, Parker began applying date codes in From then until , the codes took the form of a pair of digits; the first indicating which quarter and the second the year.
Thus, a pen with a 46 code is from October through December of , and pens made in the third quarter are very obvious about their year. First quarter, In , the codes for the quarters were changed to simple dots; the accepted reason for this is that it saved in the making of the stamps; rather than having a new code-stamp each quarter, a dot was merely ground off the one for the year. This means that the codes now had a single digit, flanked and supported by dots at the start of the year, dropping the one beneath in the second quarter, the one behind in the third, and standing alone in the fourth.
I understand that this was not brought in until the second quarter of , so the codes for that year should go from 18 to. First quarter, This single digit code persisted until the end of the s, when a second digit appeared.

COMMENTS: Balance is the second most prevalent pen in my own collection, the few hundred examples I’ve hunted still running short compared to the Parker Vacumatic accumulation. One can find a huge range of models and colors.
George Safford Parker, who worked as a teacher of telegraphy, supplemented its income with the trade in fountain pens. Having to repair the pens that he sold, it began to improve their functioning, and because the pens he changed worked better than the original and had success, he decided to found his own company. In George Parker associated with William F. In fact, the ” Lucky Curve ” was simply a good feeder, which remained in production until , and was used as a trademark for a number of pens, but there are doubts that the curved form actually had the effect to avoid the accumulation of ink, because much repairers cutted it, because the curved part makes it difficult to reinsert it between the nib and section.
A rare Parker Snake In the early years Parker began manufacturing good quality hard rubber pens. In this period it was famous for her silver overlay pens, and in particular for the Snake pen with a snake shaped overlay , that is sought after by collectors for its rarity, and for the Black Giant pen, characterized by a very large size. Another distinction point for Parker pens was the creation of button filler , introduced in as reaction to the creation of the lever filler , which was never been used in the company’s flagship models, despite is diffusion between all the competitors of that time.
Duofold advertisement from ’20s. Parker continued to produce hard rubber pens with good results, focusing on the functionality of his pens and on the benefits of the button filler , but the real breakthrough came in with the launch of Duofold , which was a huge success, by getting the company at the top of sales. The success of the Duofold , despite its price 10 dollars was high for the time, continued for over a decade in which the models were revised several times, adjusting the production to the introduction of new materials such as celluloid or the new Streamlined style with tapered models.
